Remarkably bright creatures
****
I just finished this one, and I have to say… it wasn’t love at the beginning.
It took me a bit to get into it. The story felt slow, and I wasn’t sure where it was going at first. But I kept going—and I’m really glad I did.
Once the characters started coming together, everything just clicked. I got attached without even realizing it, and by the end, I didn’t want to leave them.
It’s such a gentle story, but there’s a lot underneath—loneliness, loss, connection… all the things that make us human. And then there’s Marcellus (the octopus), who somehow ends up being one of the most insightful characters in the whole book. I didn’t expect that part to work as well as it did, but it really does.
What I loved most is how everything slowly ties together. Nothing feels forced. It just unfolds naturally, and before you know it, you’re feeling all of it.
Also… I’m starting to question my recent book choices 😄
Between this one and my last few reads, I seem to be on a streak of stories centered around older characters. Not planned—but clearly, I have a theme going! And honestly… I’m not mad about it.
If you’re like me and prefer books that grab your attention right away, this one might feel a bit slow at first. But if you stick with it, it turns into a really beautiful and touching story.
